When was the last time you really looked at your center’s common spaces? Not as a busy director or staff member, but as a parent or prospective team member walking in for the first time. It’s so easy to become blind to the chipped paint, outdated posters, or faint smells we’ve grown accustomed to. These “invisible” details may not stand out to you anymore—but they’re often the first things families notice.
I remember when I toured my center for the first time as a prospective employee. When I walked into the building, an unpleasant odor hit me and as I looked around, all I saw was clutter. I was interviewing to be a Director, but I also had young children who would be using the space and I almost turned down the role because of that first impression. At the end of the day, I decided to take the job and immediately got to work getting things in order.
Your entrance way and common spaces are the gateway to everything your center offers. A clean, organized, and welcoming space doesn’t just impress touring families—it sets the tone for how they feel about your program. And the good news? A few thoughtful updates can make a huge difference.
That’s why this month’s Facilities Focus is all about seeing your space with fresh eyes. Is the bulletin board up-to-date? Do the rugs need a deep clean? Is there clutter that you’ve walked past so many times it blends into the background? Try your best to look at the details you normally skip over and never forget that your space is the first impression families have of your center. Let’s make it count!
